GREY MATTER

At a recent New York concert by the mewithoutYou, a rock band which has used my paintings and drawing in six of their albums, I was pleasantly surprised to see how they transformed my old black-and-white drawing which they had selected for the cover of their latest album Pale Horses. It had been dramatically enlarged to serve as a backdrop on the stage, and it looked really impressive. This gave me an idea to create a series of works of a similar type, depicting something like a human with the face of a bird, or a bird with human features. Eventually, other characters came to mind - and came to life not only on canvas but in sculpture, as well. Three-dimensional works encouraged me to explore the subject further and I made several sculptures which in my view hark back to the religious statuary of Ancient Egypt. Other works contained in this catalog also came out of this project.
